Sun Temple grounds were built by the Solanki King Bhimdev I to honor the Sun God or Surya Dev. In ancient India, dance was considered to be very sacred. The people developed and adopted ancient dance forms to honor different gods and goddesses. People of Modhera used to perform a particular dance to honor Surya Dev, which later became a three-day-long grand event. It is held every year in January for three days. The beautiful Sun Temple acts as the backdrop during the festival. The Sun Temple at Modhera was built during the Solanki King Bhimdev I period. The temple is now in ruins. It is considered one of the best specimens of Indian art and architecture of the bygone era. The temple is dedicated to Lord Surya.
