The airport, which was built prior to independence, saw its first plane landing in 1924. Following independence, it rose to prominence as a major international airport.
It was originally known as the Dum Dum Airport because of its location. In 1995, when a new domestic terminal was inaugurated, it was renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in honour of the great freedom fighter.
The NSCBI Airports, as one of the country's oldest, has been recognised for its excellent passenger services. It was ranked 9th among the Best Airports in India for The Skytrax World Airport Awards 2014, among other honours.
Terminal 2 at the NSCBI Airport serves as a single integrated terminal for all flights. The terminal, which has been in operation since 2013, is outfitted with modern infrastructure and amenities. It was built to eliminate the inconvenience of having separate domestic and international terminals. It handles both domestic and international flight arrivals and departures.
